The Jefferson City Police Department has arrested two people in connection with thefts from motor vehicles.
According to a release from the department, police are investigating a number of thefts from motor vehicles, all of which happened between 9 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. today.
During an investigation of a stalled car at Missouri Boulevard and Virginia Street, an office noticed alcohol and an "excessive amount of various items crowded around the driver, passenger, and throughout the back passenger compartment of the vehicle." Both occupants were minors and they were arrested for possession of alcohol.
During a search, officers then located marijuana and a wallet that had been reported stolen Sunday night. Further investigation revealed the items in the car were stolen from various vehicles in Jefferson City.
Police arrested Jared Hayes, 17, Jefferson City, and Charles Clemens, 18, Jefferson City, and both are being held at the Cole County Jail pending charges for felony stealing, felony theft of a credit card, minor in possession, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and felony possession of a controlled substance with prescription medication.
The department has taken 10 reports as of Monday morning, and anticipate more reports of thefts from vehicles. Anyone who may have had items taken from their vehicle is asked to contact the department's non-emergency number at 634-6400.
Police noted all items were taken from unlocked vehicles. Items include purses, wallets, ID cards, credit cards, tools, electronics and ammunition.
Police are reminding people to remove valuables from their vehicles at night and place them out of view, as well as to lock vehicle doors.
