Cause of JC structure fire under investigation

Although the cause of a structure fire early Friday morning in Jefferson City is under investigation, authorities do not believe there was anything suspicious about it.

The fire at 609 Ohio Street was called in just after 4 a.m.

The converted apartment house was occupied by three men who all were able to get out safely.

The fire started in an attic/storage area on the second floor.

"It's difficult to get to those fires," said Fire Chief Matt Schofield. "Fires where we have to deal with partitions can be difficult to access to get water on the fire, but we were able to bring the fire under control in short time."

While the exterior of the home was left in good shape, there was smoke and water damage throughout the interior of the structure, with heavy fire damage on the second floor.

The Red Cross is assisting the men who were displaced.

"The amount of damage in a fire sometimes makes it hard to determine a cause," Schofield said.
