New Bloomfield district may hire engineer to assess needs

NEW BLOOMFIELD, Mo. - New Bloomfield R-3 School District Superintendent David Tramel spoke with an engineer about performing an assessment of the district's facilities.

The school district formed a committee last month to prioritize a list of potential facility repairs. The New Bloomfield Board of Education will then decide if it wants to bundle those repairs and put a no-tax-increase bond issue on the spring ballot.

Tramel has already contacted vendors who provided the district with their solutions to facility repairs. Tramel told the school board Thursday night that he thought the engineer would provide a new perspective on the district's facilities. The engineer Tramel contacted develops assessments of school facilities in Illinois. Tramel spoke to the engineer Tuesday and is waiting to hear how much he will charge for the facility assessment.

After last month's school board meeting, Tramel said it makes sense for the school district to go through with the bond issue now - bonds have low interest rates right now and contractors have been bidding competitively in the market. But, it doesn't make sense to replace items that don't need replacing quite yet. Tramel said the district must decide how critical the repairs are and what is best financially for the district. He told the board Thursday night that an engineer could help with that decision.
