Owls finish seventh at tourney

CLINTON, Iowa - The William Woods volleyball team went 2-2 and finished seventh in the Ashford University Tournament.

The Owls started the event by splitting a pair of matches Friday.

William Woods began with a 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22 win against St. Ambrose.

Brittney Engelbrecht (Helias High School) dished out 42 assists for the Owls and also picked up 18 digs and seven kills. Abbi McKnelly (Jefferson City High School) racked up a match-high 15 kills for William Woods and tied for second on the team with 19 digs.

Northwestern (Iowa) then beat William Woods 25-18, 28-30, 27-29, 25-13, 15-9.

McKnelly led the Owls with 18 kills and also had four digs. Engelbrecht racked up 54 assists and 20 digs, and she also added five kills.

To open play Saturday, Cardinal Stritch beat William Woods 25-20, 15-25, 25-23, 25-21.

Engelbrecht had 46 assists, 15 digs and one kill, while McKnelly had 12 kills, eight digs, one assist and one block.

The Owls finished up with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 win against Central Methodist.

McKnelly had a match-high 16 kills and also had eight digs and one block, while Engelbrecht led all players with 42 assists and also tied for the team lead with 17 digs. She also had three kills.

William Woods is now 8-8 on the season.
