Driver in custody after leading police on chase

The driver of a car who led police on a chase from Jefferson City past Ashland was taken into custody early Sunday after officers set up spike strips to stop the fleeing vehicle.

Jefferson City police attempted to pull over a car traveling westbound on U.S. 50 near downtown around 2:40 a.m. Instead, the driver continued northbound on U.S. 63 across the Missouri River bridge and then toward Columbia with officers in pursuit.

The speed of the chase on rural stretches of the highway varied from 40 to 80 mph, according to initial reports.

Deputies from the Boone County Sheriff's Department were alerted to the chase and deployed spike strips on U.S. 63 at the Columbia Airport interchange. At around 3 a.m., shortly after passing that location, the car was stopped and the driver was taken into custody.
