National Night Out on tap Sept. 16

The 31st Annual National Night Out has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The National Night Out Campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies and Neighborhood Watch groups. More than 8,000 communities from all 50 states and more than 28 million people are expected to participate in the event.

National Night Out is designed to:

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.

• Generate local support for local anti-crime programs.

• Strengthen neighborhoods, police and community relations.

• Send a message that the community is organized and fighting back against crime.

Jefferson City residents are encouraged to turn their outside porch light on between 7 and 10 p.m. on Sept. 16 to show their support for the program. Those groups that schedule a neighborhood function such as a picnic, ice cream social or any other gathering will be visited by a law enforcement officer. Crime prevention materials and crime statistics for that area will be provided by the visiting officers.

To schedule a function or to obtain information on how to form your own Neighborhood Watch, contact Sgt. Joe Matherne at 573-634-6400.
