Local man gets probation for assault in cat shooting

A Jefferson City man has been placed on two years unsupervised probation for pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault for attacking another man who shot his cat in March.

James Nilges Jr., 29, of 1202 Lee St., must also complete 20 hours of community service and complete 10 days of electronic shackle monitoring.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Roger Eveler, 52, of 1120 Cordell St., admitted to shooting the cat. He is charged with misdemeanor animal abuse and is scheduled to be in court on that charge later this month.

Nilges came to Eveler's residence and assaulted him by hitting and kicking him on his face and body.

Eveler said he shot the cat because there are lots of loose animals in his neighborhood, and he didn't see any collar on the cat. He said there had not been any property damage done by the cat, and it wasn't causing him any problems.

The cat was shot once in the head with a pellet gun.
