Helias wins Bruin Invite

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Helias girls tennis team defeated Park Hill, Quincy (Ill.) Notre Dame and Rock Bridge on Wednesday to win the Bruin Invite at Rock Bridge in Columbia.

The Lady Crusaders began by defeating Park Hill, 4-0. Ashley Dowden and Abby Dowden won their singles matches - 4-1, 4-0 and 4-0, 4-1, respectively. Mary Conley and Lauren Highfill won the first doubles match, 4-0 4-0, and Grace Verslues and Emmi Theroff won the second, 4-1, 4-2.

Helias then took down Quincy Notre Dame, 3-1. Ashley Dowden and Conley won the singles matches - 4-1, 4-0 and 5-3, 4-1, respectively. Highfill and Abby Dowden lost the first doubles match, 1-4, 4-1, 5-10. It was the only match Helias would lose all day. Megan Villanueva and Cassidy Roling secured a 3-5, 4-2, 10-8 win in the second doubles match.

The Lady Crusaders ended on a high note by sweeping Rock Bridge, 4-0. Ashley Dowden and Conley won the singles matches - 4-1, 4-1 and 4-0, 5-4 (7-4), respectively. Highfill and Abby Dowden won the first doubles match, 4-2, 4-1, and Villanueva and Roling won the second, 5-3, 4-1.

The Lady Crusaders are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Southwest Missouri Invitational, hosted by Glendale High School in Springfield.
