Rollover accident sends 2 children to hospital

Two young children injured in a rollover accident early Friday afternoon were treated and released from a local hospital.

And, Jefferson City police said in a news release, the driver of the 2003 Jeep Liberty "is facing multiple charges as a result of this crash."

The children, ages 3 and 4, were not otherwise identified. They were released from the hospital into their parents' custody.

Police said Johnny D. Quehl, 58, Jefferson City, was westbound in the 1700 block of U.S. 50-63 - west of the Eastland Drive interchange - when he lost control about 1:57 p.m., and the Jeep ran off the right side of the highway, then down an embankment.

Some witnesses told police the Jeep just began to slide in its lane, then went off the road.

Police arrested Quehl on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. They did not specify the other charges he might be facing.

The initial investigation indicated only one of the two children was restrained properly in the Jeep.

Quehl was using his seatbelt, and told officers he was not injured.

Police reported that numerous witnesses and bystanders had stopped to assist, as well as Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers.

The crash remains under investigation by the Jefferson City Police Department's Traffic Unit.
