Helias in fourth after first day of state golf

The conditions were wet and blustery Monday for the competitors in the MSHSAA Class 1 girls golf championships in Springfield.

But they were better than those for the Class 2 players in Joplin.

The Helias Lady Crusaders sit in fourth place after the opening day of the Class 1 championships at River Cut Golf Course.

"It was as tough a day as I can remember on the golf course," Helias coach Dan Mathes said.

Helias totaled a 366 on Monday. MICDS leads the nine-team field with a 330, two shots better than defending team champion John Burroughs. Pembroke Hill is third at 343. California is eighth with a 407.

Jenna Kosmatka shot an 85 to lead the Lady Crusaders and is tied for 19th. Alex Nelson carded a 91 and is 37th. Lauren Plunkett was one shot behind her teammate with a 92 to tie for 38th. Luci Francka of the Lady Crusaders is tied for 58th after recording a 98, while Ashten Lorts is tied for 69th after shooting a 105.

"We're sitting in pretty good shape," Mathes said. "We did all right on a tough day."

The start of the tournament was pushed back more than three hours and the players went off on a shotgun start. They will have another shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. today.

Hannah Muroski of Southern Boone led area players by shooting a 79 to sit in seventh. Mikala Jungmeyer of Russellville is tied for 14th after an 83, while Taylor Hayes from School of the Osage is tied for 17th after an 84.

Renee Roberts shot an 89 to lead California. She is in a tie for 28th. Rylee Glenn had a 104 to tie for 66th, while Sophie Brant shot a 105 and is tied for 69th. Haley Goans is tied for 76th after shooting a 109.

The top four teams will receive trophies, while the top 15 individuals will be named all-state.

At Twin Rivers Country Club in Joplin, the Class 2 tournament got in nine holes before conditions forced Monday's round to be called off due to weather.

The players, including Brooke Thompson of Jefferson City, are scheduled to resume the tournament today.
