Local girls recognized at Alpha Kappa Alpha Cotillion ball

The following girls received awards at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Debutante Cotillion in November.

Honorable Mention: presented to Wendy Steward who exemplified the spirit of the debutante experience by maintaining a high level of commitment, participation and service through the season.

Miss Congeniality: presented to Larissa Haxton who was voted by her peers as most congenial. She will receive a special keepsake. Miss Literary Expression: presented to Larissa Haxton for her essay on the topic of "Gender Equality in the Workplace." She will receive a special keepsake. Outstanding Scrapbook: presented to Larissa Haxton for documenting the debutante experience in her own words and images in a scrapbook. She will receive a certificate of merit. Miss Scholastic Senior: presented to Larissa Haxton recognizing the debutante in the senior class who achieved the highest cumulative grade point average. She will receive a certificate of merit and a cash award of $100.

Second Runner Up: presented to Larissa Haxton for raising the third highest amount of money through ticket sales and sponsorships. She will receive a plaque and a scholarship in the amount of $1,200.

Community Service Award: presented to Gloria Johnson for submitting verification of service hours and for the most service hours earned at a qualifying organization or agency. She will receive a certificate of merit. Ticket Sales Award: presented to Gloria Johnson for having the highest number of individual ticket sales for 2014. She will receive a certificate of achievement and a cash award in the amount of $500. Miss Fashionetta: presented to Gloria Johnson for raising the most money through ticket sales and sponsorships. She will receive a plaque and a scholarship in the amount of $4,000.

Miss Scholastic Junior: presented to Evonne Wilson for achieving the highest cumulative grade point average in the junior class. She will receive a certificate and a cash award in the amount of $100.

First Runner Up: presented to Amauri Osby for raising the second highest amount of money through ticket sales and sponsorships. She will receive a plaque and a scholarship in the amount of $1,500.
