Shooting in Jefferson City nets 5 years in prison

A St. Louis man pleaded guilty to charges brought in Jefferson City in connection with a shooting in the 700 block of Madison Street in November 2013 and was sentenced to five years in prison.

The sentence against Joseph Cotton III, 27, will run concurrent to all other sentences against him.

He pleaded guilty in Cole County court to first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Cotton had also been charged with being involved in the robbery of the McDonald's restaurant on Jefferson Street a few days before the shooting, but those charges were dismissed.

The shooting incident began at Club Lush in the 700 block of Madison Street when witnesses said Cotton got into an argument at the front door about having to pay a cover charge.

Cotton left the club, hitting a female. An argument ensued between Cotton and several people.

Cotton then pulled out a handgun and fired eight shots, striking four people, leaving them with non-life-threatening wounds.

One of the victims said Cotton came to his house and apologized for shooting him. He told the victim he didn't mean for him to get hit.
