BizBeat: Belle cottage industry celebrates 25 years

CottonBelle, a cottage industry in Belle, Mo., which manufactures high-end soft goods for the home, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an open house and sale from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, according to a news release.

Attendees can register for $100 gift cards and coupons.

CottonBelle manufactures curtains, pillows, cushions, duvet covers and other custom pieces that are shipped to top designers and furniture retailers from coast to coast and to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada and offshore accounts.

Established in 1989, CottonBelle's first decade focused on futons and futon covers, marketing them primarily in Missouri. Futon-maker Lance Cuckler has hand-crafted these deluxe mattresses and sofa beds at CottonBelle for more than 20 years. Futon covers gradually turned into a national business and, in 2011, the company acquired a pillow business in San Francisco.

CottonBelle's reputation for quality and dependability helped it survive the economic challenges brought on by the move overseas of much of the U.S. furniture manufacturing and textile industry, the news release said. With an open-line of more than 450 distinctive American-made fabrics, CottonBelle remains dedicated to textile design and manufacturing in the United States.

"Our niche and growth are in custom work and attention to every detail," said CottonBelle President Mary Lou Rath. "One of our specialties is custom cushions stitched for indoor and outdoor furniture, window seats and antiques." She and Deanna Ridenhour have managed as business partners since they started the business 25 years ago.

"We are most proud of being able to create and sustain employment in Belle, where jobs are scarce but talent and pride in workmanship abundant," Ridenhour said.
