Former Morgan sheriff's employee charged

A former Morgan County Sheriff's Department employee has been charged with stealing nearly $18,000 from the office.

According to authorities, after several weeks of investigation by sheriff's detectives, a probable cause affidavit was presented to the Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office on Tami A. Davis, 45.

Davis was charged with seven counts of felony stealing.

The charges stem from an investigation involving missing funds from the sheriff's office from January 2013 through October of this year.

Davis had a key to the lock box where the jail kept bond money and $17,862 was taken from 53 cash bonds. Detectives say Davis was using reimbursement money to pad the bank account in the sheriff's office and repay the court, while accruing debt with the county treasurer.

Court documents say the sheriff's office doesn't have enough money to pay the treasurer the $12,443 it owes because of the theft.

Davis was arrested on the warrant on Friday at her home in Versailles. As of Monday, she was being held without bond in the Pettis County Jail and the investigation into this case is continuing.
