Blair Oaks' Franks takes top honors in Class 2

BOLIVAR - Kory Franks entered the Class 2 boys state golf championships on a roll.

The junior kept right on rolling to an individual state title.

Franks finished with a 147 to capture the title by three shots in the tournament that concluded Tuesday at Silo Ridge Golf Course.

"The last three weeks or so, he really got into the zone," Blair Oaks coach Leroy Bernskoetter said. "He was just striking the ball, especially the driver. He was driving it long and in the fairways.

"These two days, I don't think he ever had a bad hit with the driver."

It's the third time Franks has earned all-state honors.

Tanner Elder of Blair Oaks captured all-state honors for the second straight season as he finished in a tie for eighth at 158.

Elder had missed practice for much of last week with a strained hip.

"Today it started to bother him a little bit, he wasn't 100 percent," Bernskoetter said.

The Falcons finished fifth as a team with a total of 681. Their bid for team honors was hampered with the loss of Austyn Moreland, who broke his foot last Friday and couldn't play at state.

"It got us out of sync a little bit because we've played with the same five all season. We were a little out of whack there," Bernskoetter said.

Bernskoetter believes the injury may have cost the Falcons a top-four finish and a team trophy at state.

"We thought there was a lot of good teams here," he said. "We kind of got our hopes up after Monday because we were only six shot out. But it's tough to go out there two days in a row and shoot great scores.

"There's a lot of what-ifs. But again, we sat back and said a lot of other teams are saying the same thing."

Jake VanRonzlen, a freshman, tied for 58th with a 177 for the Falcons. Corbin Singer tied for 84th with a 199. Braydon Pemberton, a freshman who stepped in for Moreland, finished 89th with a 221.

"We told him it wasn't really fair for him, but it was going to be a great experience," Bernskoetter said of adding Pemberton to the state team. "He said, "Yeah, let's do it.'"

Barstow captured team honors at 659. Walker Kesterson of Southern Boone was second in the individual race with a 150.
