Your Opinion: House cleaning needed

Dear Editor:

Often a quote from Dr. Phil says it all. His quote: "Sometimes I feel like I'm driving down main street of crazy town" comes to mind any time our Missouri Legislature is in session.

News Tribune articles inform us of school and community efforts to teach basic moral values to our elementary school children. A recent article informs us that even our pre-schoolers can be taught basic values. Yet, with exceptions, our state (and national legislators continue to maintain a tight control on their "sold to the highest bidder" ethics-free zone. I highly recommend that our Character Plus teachers and students conduct a mandatory remedial session entitled: Introduction to the Basics of Morality for legislators.

During the fall election of 2012, religious leaders defied our laws to inform us that unless we voted correctly based on a few select issues, the eternal salvation of our souls was in serious jeopardy. Personally, I don't believe that God is a Democrat or a Republican. However, now that "God's Own Party" is in charge in Missouri, it would seem that as citizens we have a right to a more ethical government.

Like him or not, Pope Francis is correct in stating that the great Gospel can't be whittled down to a select few issues. Well-known Christian writer Richard Rohr further points out that many Christians succeed in narrowing the great Gospel to moral issues "over which they can feel totally triumphant and superior which usually ask nothing of them personally ... ignoring most of the Bible when it asks them to change." We see evidence of this in church hierarchy ignoring the heinous crime of pedophilia while being morally outraged over contraception. Similarly, it allows those who are born heterosexual to view homosexuals as the ultimate threat to society.

Jesus said, "Love one another." He said it over and over again. The temple at Jerusalem isn't the only edifice needing a good house-cleaning. Our modern day money changers are alive and well as at the Missouri State Capitol.

Sometimes if you stop to listen you can hear the strains of the iconic banjo music of the 70s playing loud and clear along the river.
