Lincoln women return to No. 1 in rankings

The Lincoln women's track and field team may have history on their side heading into the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships later this week.

On Monday, the Lincoln women held down the No. 1 ranking in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll based on athletes and relays that have qualified for the championships. That's up one spot from their previous ranking and the last four women's teams ranked No. 1 heading into the championships went on to claim the national title.

Lincoln, which totaled 189.61 points, has 17 individual entries and two relays headed to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the championships. Grand Valley State is second with 184.22, while Adams State is next at 172.54.

Three other Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association schools - Central Missouri (eighth, 71.74), Nebraska Kearney (23rd, 34.60) and Southwest Baptist (25th, 33.62) also made the women's rankings.

On the men's side, Lincoln enters the championships ranked 12th with 57.74 points.

Missouri Southern leads the MIAA contingent in the rankings, coming in seventh with 75.69 points. Nebraska Kearney (ninth, 65.43), Pittsburg State (17th 43.30) and Southwest Baptist (19th, 41.09) also received mentions.

Adams State leads the men's rankings with 254.54 points, followed by St. Augustine (217.33) and Ashland (191.08).
