Your Opinion: Shining a light on proposed tax

Dear Editor:

I would like to shine a flashlight of public scrutiny into a black box called Amendment 7, the new sales tax. Let's poke our flashlight in and look closely around.

This black box is different in that at first glance it appears to be quite transparent. But deep inside this is more than a tax increase, it is a fundamental shift in how we Missourians collect our taxes. As you will see, it is not a healthy shift.

This new sales tax increase is part of a long term scheme to enable the big trucking firms to avoid paying for the damage they do to our roads by their huge overweight trucks. Currently they pay a per gallon fuel tax. They don't like that. The new sales tax shifts the tax away from them to Missouri's working families, by using sales taxes, not fuel taxes. Sales taxes that you will pay. Big trucking gets a free ride, compliments of you, the hardworking taxpayer.

But it is at the bottom of the black box that we find what is one of the worst parts of this; this tax increase also includes a prohibition on ever raising the current fuel tax in the future, thus binding the hands of taxpayers from fixing this travesty when it is discovered.

This new tax is brought to you by people claiming to be anti-tax, but in reality they are for big government, for big taxes, for big business, and for big tax breaks for the big trucking companies.

You can defeat their big bad ugly plans by joining me on Aug. 5 in voting no on the largest tax increase in Missouri history, Amendment 7.

No new taxes.
