A water pipe burst Wednesday morning in Jefferson City near Main Street and Missouri Boulevard, causing a small part of the street to crack and cave in.
Ann Dettmer, communications manager for Missouri American Water, said the incident was reported around 11:30 a.m. Crews shut off nearby valves to isolate the break and repair the burst pipe.
Company officials said they were unsure what caused the break, but it wasn't entirely unexpected.
"All the pipes in that area are older, and we're replacing them over time," she said.
The eastbound lane of Main Street was closed Wednesday as a result of the burst pipe, but traffic conditions remained normal, Dettmer said.
On Wednesday afternoon, she estimated the pipe and surrounding street would be fixed by this morning.
"They're an experienced crew, and they even have a local contractor working with them," Dettmer said.
