Variety of entertainment on tap for Jaycees fair

This year's Jefferson City Jaycees Cole County Fair will offer a hodgepodge of entertainment and attractions for all.

The only change to this year's event is there will not be a band on Monday night, said Erin Wiseman, Jaycees administrative assistant to the chair of the fair board. The bands and musicians that are scheduled are Eric Paslay, the Marshall Tucker Band (read more here), the Outlaws and Black Hawk, but for those who are a little bit more rock "n' roll there will also be a performances by Winger and a Def Leppard tribute band.

If live music really isn't your thing, then there are also a lot of events at the arena including motocross, mud runs, tractor pulls and the Figure 8 Scramble, which is a race akin to a demolition derby.

"We are going to have a lot of great things. I am really excited," Wiseman said. "On Wednesday we have the Show-Me Mounted Shooters and they are going to shoot balloons and do obstacles and such in our arena ... Who doesn't love watching people take horses and maneuver through obstacles?"

There will also be all the exhibitions and competitions for the 4-H Club. Attendees can see contests for cakes, photography, scrapbooking and even ham and bacon. The classic animal showing events are still a main attraction for many, including Jenny Flatt with the 4-H.

"We judge over a hundred items of different sorts," Flatt said. "I actually am looking forward to the youth part of it. It makes the most sense. It comes back to the historical reason to have a fair ... To me that is what a fair is, kids showing their vegetables and livestock."

Kids will be showing their horticulture and agriculture projects as well as livestock, including swine, poultry, lambs, goats and rabbits.

The fair is scheduled for July 28 to Aug. 2. The gates open on day one at 5 p.m. and will close at 1:30 a.m. Prices for the fair will be $1 per ticket and one ticket per ride on Monday and $12 armbands will be for sale from Tuesday through Thursday.
