Post 5 Auxiliary takes second

In last tournament of season

KANSAS CITY - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Auxiliary team took second in the Midwest American Tournament that wrapped up Sunday.

Post 5 started the event with two wins Saturday at Kansas City Kansas Community College, first taking a 3-1 win against the Missouri Bucks.

Logan Vogel threw a complete-game six-hitter, striking out six.

Dylan Hoelscher had a single, triple and one RBI for the winners, while James Reinkemeyer had a solo home run.

Jefferson City then thumped the Midwest Expos of Wichita, Kan., by a 9-2 score. Post 5 broke the game open with a six-run top of the seventh.

Hoelscher had a grand slam home run to pace the offense, while Alec Verhoff went 3-for-4 with three steals. Adam Grunden had two doubles and two RBI. Vogel was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Sam Hager pitched the first five innings to get the win, allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out six. Will Robertson finished up, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

The wins helped the team finish pool play at 4-0.

On Sunday, Post 5 put up nine runs again, defeating the Kansas City Sports Club Blaze 9-0 in the semifinal. The game was played at Rockhurst University.

Alex Dickneite pitched all five innings, allowing five hits and striking out three. The Blaze had five errors. Zach Hudspeth and Will Robertson tallied one hit and two RBI apiece.

Post 5 then took on the Sioux Falls Cyclones of South Dakota, who won 13-8. Adam Grunden gave up 10 runs in four innings on five hits. Sam Bowles allowed three runs on five hits in 22/3 innings. Each pitcher struck out one.

Robertson went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Verhoff and Vogel drove in the other two runs. Each went 2-for-3.

The season-ending loss dropped Post 5 to 15-6.
