Golden and Murphy named to preseason watch lists

COLUMBIA - The Missouri football program gained recognition on two watch lists for national awards on Monday.

Senior defensive end Markus Golden and senior tailback Marcus Murphy have been named to the 20th Annual Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List and the 2014 Paul Hornung Award Watch List, respectively.

Golden was arguably the Tiger's most productive defensive end in 2013, playing 40 percent of the team's defensive snaps and leading his position with 55 tackles. He recorded 13 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks, as well as compiling eight quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries.

Murphy was an All-Southeastern Conference Second Team selection by league coaches last season after accumulating a team-best 1,425 all-purpose yards. He recorded 10 touchdowns, nine coming on the ground and one through the air.

With 3,191 career all-purpose yards entering his final season with the Tigers, Murphy ranks eighth all-time in school history in that category.

The Hornung Award, now in its fifth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native, Paul Hornung.

Meanwhile, the Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, a former standout at Penn State and later with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of 1969 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of 1967.
