Staking claims for July 4th traditions

Before the day's celebrations and get-togethers began Friday, Andrew Clayton parked his pick-up truck in a choice spot at the Missouri National Guard's blue armory for its vantage point for the night's fireworks display.

By 6 p.m., Clayton returned to the cliff-side to set up his grill with brats and stuffed burgers for he and a group of friends.

Around the side of the armory, about 30 members of the Bell family also was setting up a picnic, decorated with patriotic pinwheels and tablecloths.

And a further down in the parking lot overlooking the Whitton Expressway, other families, including the Gaggens, were setting up their lawn chairs and settling in for the wait before the show.

What they all agreed - the spot has a great view and even better access to get gone on the highway afterward.

They may come out hours before the display, but it's worth it, they said.

"It makes it more fun and peaceful," said said Adam Gaggens.

Gaggens' cousin currently serves aboard a U.S. Navy ship.

"I'm thankful for the people who fight and can't do what we're doing now," Gaggens said.

Many members of the Bell family have served in the military, as well, spanning every branch and several generations.

The day is as much about being with family as it is about remembering the independence of the day, according to the Bells.

"We can be free and able to be with our families like this," said Zach Bell, 18.

Unlike the Bells and Gaggens, who have been gathering at the same location for many years, Clayton and his friends discovered the advantageous location only last year.

"We're always looking for a better spot," said Jared Acklie.

Bryce Branson said getting together with friends is an important part of the day, though the reason behind the holiday is never lost on them.

The backyard atmosphere with food and friends, continues as they tune their car radios in to the music coordinated with the fireworks.

"It's not just that 20 minutes," Branson said. "It's everything leading up to it."
