Police release statistics on 'Drive Sober' campaign

The Jefferson City Police Department participated in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign from Dec. 13 through Jan. 2. During this enforcement period, officers issued 428 citations.

The citations included: 10 for driving while intoxicated; 73 for speeding; 41 for adult seat belt violations; 2 for no child restraints; 29 for driving while suspended or revoked; 12 for driving without a valid driver's license; 112 for no insurance; and 149 for other hazardous moving violations, defective vehicle equipment and improper registration.

Authorities said driving while intoxicated remains one of the leading causes of fatal car crashes in Missouri, with 230 people killed in 2012. Twelve people were killed in crashes involving impaired drivers or motorcycle riders during the 2012 Christmas holiday in Missouri.
