Eight Jays move on to district semifinals

WAYNESVILLE - The Jefferson City Jays have all their wrestlers still in contention for state tournament berths after the first day of the Class 4 District 3 Tournament.

The Jays took 14 wrestlers to the tournament and all will wrestle again today for a chance to advance to state, which starts Thursday at Mizzou Arena.

Jefferson City wrestlers advancing to the semifinals include Dennis Barnes at 106 pounds, Corbin Howard at 120, Christian Mayberry at 126, Jacob Brune at 132, Alec Bise at 138, Logan Moriarity at 145, Jalen Martin at 170, and Logan Coil at 285.

Wrestlers still alive in the consolation rounds of their respective weights include Zach Benge at 113, Tanner Irwin at 152, Devin Miller at 160, Rashaun Woods at 182, Ian Coil at 195 and Matt Lawson at 220.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament.

Jefferson City leads the 13-team field after the first day with 60.5 points. Nixa is second with 57, while Waynesville (49.5), Lee's Summit West (49) and Raymore-Peculiar (48) round out the top five.
