Your Opinion: Senseless rants dominate forum

Dear Editor:

I am writing this letter in regards to the ever-increasing amount of senseless rant-type chat that seems to be infesting what is and should be a readers opinion letter section on issues that affect us all of your fine newspaper.

Please do not get me wrong here, I am by no means attempting to tell you how to run a newspaper. The entire staff and management of the Jefferson City News Tribune are indeed a highly professional, and competent group of people that do an outstanding job at what they do. And I for one appreciate and respect you all immensely.

The thing I find so disturbing and disappointing is that a select few of your readers are intentionally or unintentionally, whatever the case may be. But the fact is that it is happening. There are some days when I begin reading people's opinion letters in the readers opinion section, I just shake my head in disbelief at how much this section resembles a YouTube comment thread on a Taylor Swift video.

These select few, whom I will not name due to the fact that I do not believe in throwing dirt at separate individuals, so to speak. But the fact remains that these people use their individual opinion letters as a means of debating with, whining about, complaining about, and pretty much attacking each other's personal views on given issues, when by all fairness to the rest of us readers, they are subjecting us to childish rants that to me personally has absolutely no place in a major newspaper.

I'm all for people expressing their personal views and opinions. I think it's a truly great thing, and I practice it occasionally myself. But to just use their own opinion section privileges to attack each other in a chat-type conduct should not be condoned nor permitted by newspaper management. Like anyone else, I pay good money in order to read and stay informed on issues that affect us all. But somehow, I find absolutely nothing positive about a few individuals arguing like teen age children via your opinion section.

Surely, there are ways that you could weed out this kind of senseless behavior while at the same time allow and or impede people to individually express their opinions.
