Centertown man charged with assault after DWI accident

A Centertown man has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault in connection with an injury accident that occurred Nov. 30 in Cole County.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that a vehicle driven by John C. Hardwick, 24, Centertown, was northbound on Missouri 179, about 1.2 miles north of North Rock Creek Road, when it veered into the southbound lane and struck a vehicle driven by Chester A. Dunn, 67, Jefferson City.

Dunn and Linda S. Dunn, 57, Jefferson City, were taken to St. Mary's for treatment. Hardwick declined medical treatment at the scene.

A probable cause statement from the patrol shows Hardwick was arrested for driving while intoxicated at the scene.

The charge was changed to assault due to the cuts and bruising the Dunns received in the crash and because Hardwick was under the influence at the time, he acted with criminal negligence by driving on the wrong side of the road, causing the crash.
