Lady Jays tennis goes 2-1 in Columbia

COLUMBIA - The Jefferson City tennis team went 2-1 in Columbia on Wednesday.

The Lady Jays opened with an 8-1 win against Blue Springs South. Singles winners were Kelly Raithel (6-1, 6-4), Paige Smith (6-0, 6-1), Eden Hoogveld (6-2, 6-0), Kirsten Schmidt (6-3, 6-4) and Athira Nambiar (6-3, 6-4). Maddi Brown lost in singles (7-5, 3-6, 8-10). Doubles winners were Smith and Hoogveld (8-2), Raithel and Schmidt (8-2), and Nambiar and Brown (8-6).

Next, the Lady Jays fell 2-7 to St. Joesph's Academy. Singles winners were Smith (6-4, 6-4) and Hoogveld (6-3, 6-2). Raitherl (0-6, 2-6), Schmidt (0-6, 2-6), Nambiar (1-6, 6-3, 5-10), and Brown (1-6,0-6) lost in singles. Smith and Hoogveld (1-8), Raithel and Schmidt (2-8), and Nambiar and Brown (0-8) lost in doubles.

Finally, the Lady Jays completed a weather-delayed match from Tuesday at Hickman with a 7-2 win against the Kewpies. Singles winners were Raithel (4-6, 6-4, 10-3), Smith (6-1, 6-1), Hoogveld (6-1, 6-0), Nambiar (6-0, 6-4), and Erica Dunn (6-4, 6-1). Brown (2-6, 1-6) lost in singles. Doubles winners were Smith and Hoogveld (10-1) and Nambiar and Brown (10-5). Raithel and Schmidt lost in doubles (4-10).

The Lady Jays (5-1) will host Waynesville 4 p.m. today at Washington Park.
