Powerboat wrecks at Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Saturday

Two men treated for serious injuries following accident

A catamaran driver and owner suffered serious injuries after their powerboat flipped while running in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Saturday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Joel Begin was driving the 42-foot SC Outerlimits catamaran, with Outerlimits owner, founder and throttleman Mike Fiore in an early run on the Lake of the Ozarks course along the 34-mile marker of the main channel near event host site Captain Ron's in Sunrise Beach.

At approximately 10:34 a.m., Begin lost control of the powerboat due to win interference causing the vessel to become airborne and overturn twice before re-entering the water bow first and coming to a rest end-over-end on the water, according to the Highway Patrol Report.

Shootout rescue crews extracted Fiore and Begin. Lake West Ambulance transported Begin, 47 of Valley Field Quebec, to Lake Regional Hospital, and air ambulance transported Fiore, 44 of Bristol, Rhode Island, to University Hospital in Columbia. Both men suffered serious injuries.

According to staff at Captain Ron's, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout races continued Saturday afternoon. No updates on the medical status of the two men were immediately available.
