Your Opinion: Inspectors general denied access

Dear Editor:

A recent News Tribune article provided more insight into the "transparency" of the Obama administration.

Forty-seven inspectors general, federal employees responsible for investigating fraud and corruption in government, signed a letter sent to Sens. Tom Carper and Tom Coburn, leaders of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee, and Reps. Darrell Issa and Elijah Cummings, top members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committees, to complain about lack of access to information.

According to the Inspector General Act of 1978, inspectors general are supposed to have "complete, unfiltered, and timely access to all information and materials ... without unreasonable administrative burdens."

The IGs charge that the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the Chemical Safety Board have withheld information from investigations. The IGs further state that "watchdogs" from other federal agencies are also being refused access to information. Several of the IGs who signed the letter were appointed by our "most transparent president" Mr. Obama.

In addition to the missing Lois Lerner emails, and the missing EPA emails, it was recently revealed that emails requested concerning Obamacare might also have been lost. Is there anyone with experience in the business world who actually believes that these emails were not purposely "lost"? If so, their experience is much different than mine.

In my experience, if the hard drive of someone in upper management crashed, the information would have been recovered from backup servers in days, more likely in hours. Do those who are paid with our tax dollars believe that we are so stupid that we will accept such lies from them, or are they truly this incredibly incompetent? In either case this is more proof that no one should doubt the need to minimize the amount of power held by the federal government.

In a different vein, some interesting data; the U.S. economy is responsible for over 22 percent of world GDP, yet less than 5 percent of the world population lives here. In 250 years our nation has grown from nothing to the premier world power. The phenomenal growth occurred because of capitalism and limited central government. If you don't believe so then give me a list of socialist nations with similar track records of growth. Today's "crony capitalism," handing out federal dollars in return for campaign contributions, will destroy our nation.
