MINNEAPOLIS - A court has struck down an NFL policy preventing off-duty Minnesota police officers from bringing their guns to Vikings games.
Two police organizations challenged the rule, arguing NFL policy cannot trump state law.
A Hennepin County court ruled Thursday in favor of the organizations: the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association and the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis.
The ruling applies only in Minnesota.
The groups argued even off-duty officers need to be armed at Vikings games. They said that allows officers to protect themselves and the public at a moment's notice.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the policy is designed to keep fans safe. He said the NFL will continue to enforce it at TCF Bank Stadium, as the court order allows, until the matter is resolved.
