Off-duty Osage deputies cleared to work Washington fair

The Osage County Commission had discussions this week about county deputies working at an out-of-county fair after some residents asked commissioners if this would create a problem for law enforcement coverage in their county.

Three deputies on the active staff and some members of the reserve deputy staff will be working at the Washington Town and Country Fair this upcoming week.

The deputies will be working the fair on their off-hours.

They will also drive to the fair in their own vehicles, not county-owned squad cars.

Any liability and workers compensation issues are covered by authorities in Washington.

Washington Police Chief Kenneth Hahn said they've used Osage County deputies and deputies from other counties to work the fair in the past.

It's cheaper than having their own officers work the fair since they would have to pay overtime, he said.

Osage County Presiding Commissioner Dave Dudenhoeffer said the commission told sheriff's officials not wear their deputy uniforms while they work at the Washington fair.
