Grand jury indicts couple on burglary charge

The Cole County grand jury this week indicted a Jefferson City man and woman who are each charged with second-degree burglary for breaking into a home on East Capitol Avenue in February.

Cody Thirlwall, 31, and Tira Sheldon, 38, both of 625 Georgia St., were found inside 417 E. Capitol Ave. by two other people checking on the property for owner Barbara Buescher.

The indictments mean the grand jury found there was enough evidence in these cases to send them on to the circuit courts for possible trial.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows sounds of someone running were heard from the back of the residence, and witnesses said they saw Thirwall and Sheldon running out of the house.

The two got into a vehicle, which witnesses described for police, who were then able to stop it in the 600 block of Ohio Street.

Officers brought witnesses over, and they identified Thirwall and Sheldon as the two they'd seen running from the Capitol Avenue home.

Although both denied ever being inside the residence, a search of their vehicle turned up a crate of old memorabilia, which Sheldon eventually admitted had been taken from the Capitol Avenue home.
