Commission votes to hike recreation program fees

Some programs at the Washington Park Ice Arena, as well as two other recreation programs, soon will see fee increases as approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission.

At the commission meeting Tuesday, commissioners approved several fee increases for rentals and programs at the Washington Park Ice Arena to help with the rising cost of offering the programs.

The prime time rental rate will increase from $225 per hour to $230 per hour; non-prime time rental rate increased from $175 per hour to $180 per hour; cosponsored activities increased from $155 per hour to $160 per hour; the learn to skate and learn play/skate hockey increased from $40 to $42; the ice skating power class increased from $20 to $21; and formation sensations increased from $125 to $150.

Also approved Tuesday were fee increases for the High School Hoops program, which will increase from $170 to $185, and the NFL Flag Football registration fee, which increased from $55 to $60.

Commission member Gart Pollard said the department's cost-recovery rate for many of these programs is below 60 percent and small, incremental increases help get the department closer to covering the costs associated with providing the programs.

"Those increases are very modest," Pollard said. "Our adjustments are minimal, but they help get us closer to cost recovery."
