Lady Crusaders keep scoreboard operator occupied in win

The Helias Lady Crusaders tallied a goal in the first minute, then tallied another in the final minute.

And more than a few in between.

"It was a good game for us offensively," Helias coach Brad Dempsey said after the Lady Crusaders blanked the Kirksville Lady Tigers 9-0 on a chilly Monday at the 179 Soccer Park.

While the scoreboard clock didn't work in the first half, the numbers for the goals scored did. And changed frequently on the Helias side.

Becky Roberts scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes for Helias, with Tiffany Weaver picking up assists on both scores.

Emma Wyrick made it 3-0, settling the ball for a long shot with her right foot after a Kirksville clearing attempt. Maddie Lammers put back a rebound after a Lady Crusader shot rattled off the crossbar midway through the half.

If there is such a thing as being ambidextrous with your feet, Wyrick made a strong case for it on Helias' next score. The sophomore used her left foot to score from nearly the same spot as her first one after the ball bounced outside on a scramble in front of the Kirksville net.

"Emma is a key player for us in the middle, she's a smart player, that's why she's there," Dempsey said. "Those goals are big for her confidence, they're big for our team."

And the ability to score from the outside is a great weapon to have in your arsenal.

"It's nice to not have to walk it in and put it on a platter every time," Dempsey said.

Weaver scored the final two goals of the half for the Lady Crusaders in a span of about 20 seconds. On the first, Roberts chased down a ball at the Kirksville end line and played it toward the net to Lammers, who hit Weaver for a score.

Helias then stole the ball at midfield on the restart and Weaver drove to the Kirksville net for a 7-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Morgan Rundle made it 8-0 with a goal off a rebound after a penalty kick.

Caitlin Luebbert, a senior, capped the scoring with her first varsity goal with :06 left on the clock.

"That's big for her," Dempsey said. "She's one of the most important girls on our team because she's such a great teammate."

Sydnee Kliethermes and Olivia Wolken shared time in goal in the shutout. The duo did not have to make a save as Helias posted a 32-0 edge in total shots, which included 22 on net.

The game lost a little bit of its sharpness in the second half, which could be attributed to a pair of reasons.

First, with the big lead, the Lady Crusaders reserves saw a lot of playing time.

"I love getting those girls playing time because those girls are our future," Dempsey said.

Second, Helias was coming off a long weekend at the Heart of America Invitational in Overland Park, Kan.

"I think the girls would have liked to have had another day off," Dempsey said. "But we had a chance to keep some legs fresh by getting that early lead and that should help us the rest of the week."

Helias (6-4) will host Hannibal tonight before traveling Wednesday to take on Duchesne in St. Louis.

"After we play Duchesne, we'll have played all of the defending state champions," Dempsey said. "We've tested ourselves."

In Monday's junior varsity game, Helias posted a 6-0 victory against Kirksville.
