Your Opinion: Accountability needed, not higher taxes

Dear Editor:

"Simply add another tax/surcharge" has become the mantra for every government both small and large. Never once do we see "use our current financial resources more efficiently" as a solution. Look further into how Missouri Department of Transportation is funded along with pay and retirement benefits for their employees vs. what the average bloke earns during their career. Few jobs offer such lucrative retirement benefits.

It's not a lack of funds that's the problem here, it's is in how they're being allocated. Add this easy breezy pass through the House tax road bill plus the myriad of other tax increases also being purposed throughout state localities and you'll see our taxes increase 3 percent or more on average just this year. Meanwhile most people are lucky if they see a 1 percent pay increase be it the typical state employee or those on Social Security. Hold the top brass with the purse strings accountable for a change.

We cannot as a society tax our state into prosperity. Meanwhile we're actually harming our local economies as government "takes" more of our income hence we're the ones cutting back while government spends more. This is a case of those who're making the decisions living in a different tax bracket/world than the ones they're inflicting their pain upon.
