Work progressing on 911 issues

It appears issues with 911 communications service between Cole County emergency services and the Jefferson City Police Department are being resolved even as a committee created to deal with any such issues has begun to meet on a regular basis again.

Tuesday night was the first meeting since March of the Joint 911 Advisory Committee.

The group, made up of appointed citizens from the city and county, was brought together after Cole County Sheriff Greg White came to the county commission in August saying no one at the police department, which runs the 911 center, was dealing with concerns he had.

At Tuesday's meeting it was announced that White felt issues such as being able to dispatch from alternate locations in cases of emergencies and power outages were already being addressed after discussions he had with 911 staff.

The advisory committee will now go back to meeting four times a year, as they were called to do when they were initially established years ago.

Among the reasons the group hadn't met in several months where that many times there were not enough members to have a quorum or that there hardly were any issues to be brought up.

However, working with the Cole County Chief's Association which is made up of the county's volunteer fire departments and other emergency services, advisory committee members plan to be more vigilant in holding meetings on a regular basis.
