Police identify NYC traffic agent killed by truck

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City police have identified the on-duty traffic enforcement agent who was struck and killed by a truck.

Police say 71-year-old Kalyanarat Ranasinghe was struck by a vacuum truck as it was pulling away from a parking spot at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in midtown Manhattan.

Police say the nearly seven-year veteran agent was hit by the front passenger side of the truck and pinned under the wheel.

Police say the 43-year-old driver of the truck remained at the scene.

Police say just after Ranasinghe was struck, a coach bus trying to park in front of the vacuum truck collided with the truck. The bus driver also remained at the scene and there were no injuries reported.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered his prayers for the Ranasinghe family.
