Lady Comets roll Friday

The Fatima Lady Comets were the darlings of the jamboree.

Fatima picked up three double-digit victories against Helias, Jefferson City and Blair Oaks at a basketball jamboree Friday night at Helias. The Lady Comets played two six-minute quarters against each opponent.

“We came in here with people asking us, ‘Can we compete?’ I think we showed we can compete,” Fatima head coach Dustin Hays said. “We played well. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little surprised by the outcome tonight. At the same time I knew I’ve got a pretty good group.”

Fatima started with Helias, using an 8-0 advantage after one quarter to take a 24-9 victory. Morgan Brandt paced the Lady Comets with seven points.

Fatima then took on Jefferson City. It was another dominant opening period for the Lady Comets, as they used a 16-0 edge in the quarter to propel themselves to a 22-4 win.

Logan Abbott led Fatima with six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Fatima finished with Blair Oaks. The Lady Comets trailed by as many as four and were down 12-10 after one quarter. Fatima responded with a trio of 3s and surged to a 30-17 victory.

Brandt drained three 3s to lead the Lady Comets with 11 points, finishing with a team-high 21 points on the night.

“She’s our motor,” Hays said. “How she goes we go a lot of the time. That’s what we need.”

Fatima opens the season Dec. 2 against Owensville.

“Our defensive intensity was what pleased me the most,” Hays said of Fatima’s play Friday. “We got after it on the defensive end. Our ball movement on offense was pretty good. We got some open 3s because our inside-out action.

“To start the season I’m very pleased.”
