Washington finishes off Missouri

COLUMBIA — Chelsea Thomas did all she could to extend her career and Missouri’s season.

But the Tigers’ offense didn’t cooperate.

Washington got a run in the first inning and it was enough to end Missouri’s season as the Huskies won 1-0.

Missouri ends its season at 38-14 while Washington (43-15) advances to the College World Series next week in Oklahoma City.

“I can’t explain it, especially the offensive part of it, you know, we’ve swung the bat pretty well all season,” Missouri head coach Ehren Earleywin said. “We hit well in the SEC Tournament, we hit over .300 as a team this season, we probably hit close to .300, maybe even better in the SEC over 24 games.”

The Tigers mustered just two hits and couldn’t take advantage of four walks from Washington starter Bryana Walker. In two games against Washington, Missouri managed just six hits, committed five errors (three Friday) while blowing a late lead in Thursday’s game.

The Huskies lone run came on a solo home run by Victoria Haywood to lead off the game.

It was a tough ending to a stellar career for Thomas. She allowed just two hits and one walk in six innings after pitching eight innings in Thursday’s loss.

“I knew (Thursday) that I had two games to throw (Friday) so I really prepared mentally,” Thomas said. “I can’t tell you enough how, if you get yourself to be mentally ready, it can affect your body physically. I didn’t want to be done but as far as the team, they’ve carried me through parts of the season when I couldn’t even hold the ball, and I feel like that’s just part of being on a team.”

Walker got the win for Washington as she gave up two runs and four walks in five innings. Kaitlin Inglesby picked up the save, throwing a pair of scoreless innings.

It’s the second straight season Missouri has lost in the Super Regional. The Tigers lost in three games to LSU last season.
