Man found dead in jail cell in Jennings

JENNINGS, Mo. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate has hanged himself in the St. Louis suburb of Jennings.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/13maxKu ) reports that the 24-year-old Charles Anthony Chatman Jr. was found dead about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Jennings public safety director Joe Zlotopolski says a video recording shows Chatman hanging himself at 7:42 a.m. No one was watching when it happened.

Chatman had only been in the one-man cell about an hour. Zlotopolski says Chatman was moved out of a cell with other inmates because he had become combative.

Zlotopolski called what happened "horrible."

His mother, Kathy Schmidt, said her son was arrested on bench warrants for traffic violations in St. Louis County and had been jailed for about a week at different facilities. She says he had multiple fines from several jurisdictions.
