Missouri downs Mississippi in softball

OXFORD, Miss. — A four-run fifth inning proved to be the difference.

No. 8 Missouri broke open a tie game in that inning to topple Mississippi 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Crane, Jenna Marston and Kelsea roth all smacked run-scoring doubles in the decisive fifth inning, and mixed in with a run on a double steal in the frame, Missouri turned a 1-1 game into a 5-1 lead.

Rachel Hay added an RBI groundout in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Mississippi had taken the initial lead in the bottom of the first before Nicole Hudson tied the game with an RBI double in the third.

Chelsea Thomas picked up the win by allowing one run on five hits in six innings. She struck out four Rebels. Hudson pitched the final inning and allowed two hits to go along with a strikeout.

Missouri (14-2, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) goes for the series sweep against Mississippi (18-14, 1-4) Sunday.
