Pioneer Trails sidewalks on open house agenda

An open house public meeting will be held Tuesday for residents to discuss a project to put in sidewalks near Pioneer Trail Elementary in Apache Flats.

The meeting will be held at the school from 4-6 p.m. and citizens can come and go as they please.

Representatives from the county and their engineering consultant will be there to talk about the project.

In April, commissioners approved an engineering contract with Bartlett & West for putting in sidewalks along Rainbow Drive and Pioneer Trail Road near Pioneer Trails Elementary School.

The contract is worth $115,000.

The county was awarded a grant from MoDOT through the Safe Routes to School Program for the maximum amount of $250,000.

The county will not need to put up matching funds or pay back the money.

However, the county will have to find additional funding sources to do engineering work before it knows the final construction cost estimate.

While the primary focus of work will be sidewalks, some minor street improvements will also be made.

The work will begin on Business 50 West at Pioneer Trail Drive and end on Rainbow Drive at Hunters Run.

The project has to be bid by next year.
