Syrian opposition urges US to provide weapons fast

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The leader of Syria's Western-backed opposition group is urging the United States to quickly supply promised military support to prevent a military victory by President Bashar Assad's regime.

The Syrian National Coalition sent out a statement from its president, Ahmad Al-Jarba, while he was still meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the United Nations Thursday.

Al-Jarba called the situation in Syria "desperate" and said the opposition urgently needs American action "to push the international community to demand a political transition."

He accused the Assad regime of using indiscriminate weapons ranging from chemical weapons to cluster bombs and said opposition fighters must have weapons to defend themselves.
