Volunteers wanted for Churchill Museum outreach program
Monday, July 22, 2013
The National Churchill Museum hopes to expand its programming to include area schools and organizations, but it needs help.
The institution is looking for volunteers to take part in the return of its ongoing outreach program, which would hold special programs and workshops with school groups both at the museum and throughout Mid-Missouri.
“We’ve been discussing it for a while, but we’re trying to do outreach programs more,” Education and Public Programs Coordinator Mandy Plybon said. “My focus this year is to do more outreach, and I’m only one person, so I’m looking for people to help me do those outreach programs as well as to help in field trips in the spring.”
The program would have volunteers traveling throughout Callaway County and other Central Missouri communities with the goal of “inspiring lifelong learning” through programming. They also would help at the museum with field trips and other educational events during the spring.
Plybon said she is primarily looking for retired educators, tutors, homeschool parents or others with an educational background.
“They need to be outgoing enough to stimulate conversations, and they need to be willing to learn our programs and to read the training materials or do additional outside reading about Churchill or the museum,” she said.
She anticipates the programs will be primarily utilized by area schools, but would be open to any group.
“Volunteers would go to the location and do a hands-on, interactive program with the audience members. They would be teaching the groups .... on a variety of outreach programs from leadership and citizenship skills to Churchill’s travels,” she said.
Volunteers must have a current driver’s license and reliable transportation, and must pass a background check before being accepted.
