Essay winner will throw first pitch for Cards game

A 10th-grader from Osage County will throw the ceremonial first pitch at Saturday's St. Louis Cardinals game.

Kate Massman's essay on bullying was among nearly 60 submissions to the Vitae Foundation's Essay Contest on Life Issues.

She will be joined by other top essay writers from Osage County schools during Osage County Night at the Ballpark.

Freshman Megan Hodge will visit the broadcast booth and meet former Cardinal baseball player and current radio sportscaster Mike Shannon.

Other winners include: senior Brent Dudenhoeffer, Osage County R-1; junior Taylor Libbert, Osage County R-3; sophomore Courtney Barker, Osage County R-2; eighth-grader Anna Starke, Osage County R-3; eighth-grader Grace Vehige, St. Mary School, Frankenstein; eighth-grader Kiley Williams, Immaculate Conception School, Loose Creek; eighth-grader Mollie Jo Wibberg, St. George School, Linn; and eighth-grader Anna Massman, St. Joseph School, Westphalia.

The essay contest is supported by an Alphonse J. Schwartze Foundation grant. The foundation also is supporting Vitae with a radio advertising campaign on the St. Louis Cardinals Radio Network for the 2013 season and a billboard campaign in Osage and Cole counties.
