Post 5 Seniors claim tourney title

BLUE SPRINGS - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors captured a pair of wins to claim the championship of the Fike Wood Bat Tournament on Sunday.

The Seniors started the day with a 4-2 win over Washington in the semifinals, using one big inning to spearhead the win.

Post 5 got all of its runs in the top of the third inning, while Washington could muster just single tallies in the second and seventh frames.

Daniel Castillo led the way for the winners, as he accounted for half the team's hit with a single and two doubles, and he also drove in three of the four runs.

Also for the local club, Cole Distler, Trevor Schnieders and Seth Lehmen had one hit apiece.

Distler got the win by twirling a five-hitter. Both runs were earned and he walked five and struck out five.

In the championship game, Post 5 scored in each of the first four innings and romped to a 12-2 win over Belleview in six innings.

Post 5 racked up four runs in the top of the first, then added one in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth.

Patrick Schnieders racked up two singles, a home run and four RBI for the victors.

Castillo also had a home run, a solo shot, while Distler had a single, double and two RBI.

Also for Post 5, Dylan Brauner had two hits and one RBI, Kyler Maxey had one hit and two RBI, Logan Bax had a pair of hits and Trevor Schnieders had a double and one RBI.

That was more than enough support for winning pitcher Jacob Koelling, who gave up one unearned run during a six-hitter. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

Post 5 (33-4) will return to action in the district tournament set for Wednesday through Sunday in Jefferson City.
