McGuire out as new LU curator
Thursday, January 31, 2013
He was a Lincoln University curator long enough to help hire Kevin Rome as LU’s next president, but John McGuire won’t be a board member when it holds its next public meeting, and celebrates LU’s Founder’s Day, next Thursday.
Gov. Jay Nixon’s office didn’t confirm it Wednesday, but the state Senate’s Gubernatorial Appointments Committee was told Wednesday morning that Nixon will withdraw McGuire’s nomination to the post, after opposition surfaced among alumni and the Legislature’s Black Caucus.
“Lincoln has a strong history that African-Americans want to uphold,” Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis and a committee member, told the News Tribune Wednesday morning, “and to put someone on who has no connection to Lincoln whatsoever, no relation to Lincoln (and) no sentimental value to Lincoln ... threw up a red flag.”

So let me guess, Mr McGuire isn't black. This is a state funded university. If MU removed a curator because they were black there would be hell to pay, but remove a white person from Lincoln and it's just retaining it's black history. If things are ever going to be equal it means that has to go both ways. Quit giving bias preferences to LU. Make them follow the same rules the other state funded universities have to.

I don't think it has anything to do with race, as stated, he has no connection with LU and never has. That was the reason given, so why bring anything else into it!!!!!!!!!!!

Just browsing a few other curator's profiles here and there I don't see a Lincoln University connection for any of them so far.
For example
Dr. Cook got his Phd in St. Louis. No mention of where he got his Bachelors and/or Masters.
Maybe they just omitted the undergrad stuff but you would think if a curator had graduated or even attended LU they would be sure to comment about it.

Dr Cook worked and retired from Lincoln, and a choice has been made now!

Lincoln needs to embrace their past heritage but look forward and accept diversity just as every other institution is required to do. It is an HBCU but almost half of the enrollment is non African American. It is an HCBU but it is a PUBLIC institution, with public funding, and as such the job should go to qualified people. The statements reported in the news paper make it clear that only an African American candidate is an acceptable choice. Such as the only candidates for President were African American. Until the University becomes more inclusive and accepts diversity it will still be a name and not an intergral part of the Central Missouri community.
