Dear Editor:
You don’t have to look far to see disappointing stories about some of our society’s “heroes” — from the Lance Armstrong saga to the recent decision of the Baseball Hall of Fame not to induct any new members, it can seem like heroes are hard to come by.
I would raise the point that our community is filled to overflowing with heroes — volunteers, teachers, coaches, nurses, pastors, firefighters, law enforcement and more.
Thank you for your recent coverage of the Habitat for Humanity Tuesday Crew and their selfless efforts to build Habitat homes in our community. They are just a few of the many in our community who express their love and concern for others with action.
At HyVee last week I saw a gentleman proudly wearing his World War II veteran cap. He was struggling to walk and I saw a young man rush to his side, take his hand and shake it, saying “Sir, thank you for your service!”
I wish I could express the look on both of their faces in words.
Nice to be reminded there are heroes in our midst. They are swinging a hammer in our neighborhoods, serving meals at the Salvation Army, praying with the sick in our hospitals, and yes, even walking to get coffee in the grocery store.
They may never make a million dollar endorsement deal or be interviewed by Oprah, but Jefferson City has heroes. And when we see them, we should thank them.
