Your Opinion: City must re-evaluate conference center
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
The city has said the Jefferson City lodging tax collection is falling below predictions. They have no concern that the $9 million needed for the convention center will be raised. This should be a concern since lodging tax is collected from people that stay in hotels in our city.
This could be an early indication that the out-of-state company that was hired to analyze the city and the city government over-estimated the amount of people coming to the city and the need for a new hotel and convention center.
The City Council is under the delusions of grandeur if they believe “If they build it they will come.” The council’s wait-and-see attitude and the expectation that a new hotel conference center will sell out all of the hotels in the city is ridiculous.
We need to step back and re-evaluate before we have a $9 million empty monument to remember our City Council.
